In search of Sewin (Sea Trout) Traveling westwards across the top of Wales we find some wonderful river fishing, but now the main quarry is rather different: the sewin. It is to such delightful rivers as the Clwyd, and its main tributaries the Elwy and Aled, that anglers come in search of sea trout. There are salmon in these rivers, too, particularly from August onwards. The techniques of night fishing are
nothing special, but the atmosphere certainly is. Use your trout-fishing gear and a strong leader, and practice casting in the dark. It takes time to learn to do this, but it is an invaluable skill for sea trout fishing. Night fishing for sewin generally gets under way in June and sport continues on into September, when you are just as likely to be successful using small flies during the daylight hours.
| Sewin and salmon flies Imitative fly patterns you will not need. Instead, equip yourself with a few wet flies in sizes 6 to 12. The best advice on fly patterns is always local advice: each sewin river is different and the
people who fish them know which sizes, weights and patterns work best at different times in the season. Night fishing for sewin generally gets under way in June and sport continues on into September, when you are just as likely to be successful using small flies during the daylight hours.
